Sustainability and Eco Theatre

The first eco theater artists emerged when we had no understanding of our pollution nor was there a global warming at this time. They were simply inspired from the conservationist and naturalist writers about our relationship to nature. “The first pieces of eco theater are not always seen as centered on ecological issues, but rather view ecological issues from a social, economic, and ethical perspective” (Woynarski). “These first self-proclaimed eco theater artists acted out of political disillusionment with large corporations, environmental dangers, and existing social structures. These artists addressed a specific issue at a specific place and time”(Woynarski).  This early wave of discussion of ecological issues and more inclusive forms of oppression such as “racism, repression of the lower class, immigration policies, imperialism, and state aggression”. “In [Tanja Beer’s] words, “Theatrical storytelling doesn't need to cost the earth.”" (Woynarski).  One of Tanja’s work is a fully reusable and edible set, called “The Living Stage”, as well as another design where she was working with found material.

The Broadway Green Alliance is an industry initiative that inspires the theatre community to implement more environmentally friendlier alternatives. Sustainability is a hot topic right now with Eco-Theatre “…centering ecology and integrating sustainability in every aspect of what they do” (Loveridge). “Working “sustainably” in theatre means considering the ecological, carbon, and equity implications during every step of the design, rehearsal, and performance process”(Loveridge). Examples of this range from using LED lighting to save power from the “green theater” practices and “adapting rehearsal strategies to better ensure equity and quality of work for those involved”(Loveridge). “It is up to us as modern theatre practitioners to consider the socio-ecological implications of the work we are exploring, in the name of dramaturgical integrity, truthful storytelling, and out of loyalty to the well-being and advancement of humankind”(Loveridge).
